The up-and-coming scientist Dr. Aberra Molla explains anatomy to Emperor Haileselassie & entourage in 1964.

Dr. Aberra Molla is the pioneer who computerized the Ethiopian alphabet making sure that our unique script is recognized as an international language so that we can continue using it in this so called age of Information Technology.  Since 1982, he has been working with the Ethiopian alphabet and he succeeded in 1990 in standardizing Ethiopic and caused its inclusion in Unicode – an international standard.  Examples of his accomplishments are pending patents and recognition in 1990 by the Ethiopian Research Council for computerizing Ethiopic and revolutionizing the Geez script.
But what makes Dr. Aberra exceptionally remarkable is that he is a veterinary medicine scientist and not a computer engineer.

Dr. Aberra was one of the top veterinarians selected by the US government to be sent to the United Kingdom to assist the British government to stop the spread of Foot and Mouse disease in 2001. The epidemic was controlled after he and his team members traveled (in spacemen like suits) through out England and inspected, isolated and controlled farms with animals infected with the disease.

Currently Dr. Aberra works as a supervisory public health veterinary for the Department of agriculture (USDA) serving as supervisor over a team of inspectors in several meat producing plants in a dozen Western States.

In this interview, Dr. Aberra talks about how he put together his innovative work, his profession as an Ethiopian scientist in America, his thoughts on the Ethiopian calendar and how the Ethiopian calendar should be distinguished from the Julian Calendar, and more.
