ግዕዝኤዲት is an Ethiopic word processor for Windows
developed by ABSHA/ECS of Colorado. It is a novel, simple and
efficient typing tool to render the more than 563 Ethiopic
glyphs with a maximum of two keystrokes each. It is
invented by Dr. Aberra Molla, ዶ/ር
ኣበራ
ሞላ the Ethiopian
scientist who also computerized Ethiopic.
Ethiopic or Geez is an ancient Ethiopian
alphabet that has been in use for thousands of years. It was
written manually until the printing press was introduced at the
beginning of 1900. In the 1980’s Dr. Aberra Molla computerized
Ethiopic in DOS for the first time by assigning each glyph a
separate code and by introducing a new method of typing each
character with two keystrokes..
By 2002 the set has been expanded and
included in Unicode. GeezEdit is one software that uses Dr.
Aberra Molla's invention of rendering the more than 563 Ethiopic
glyphs on computers with one or two keystrokes each in various
applications. This method is virtually similar to typing English
alphabet on computers. This is the best and simplest typing
method that expanded the power of the computer keyboard to
dozens of keyboards.
A free patent-pending version of this novel
typing method in Amharic alphabet and language with GeezEdit is
available at
http://freetyping.geezedit.com.
The free online version is to type in Amharic in Windows, Mac
and Linux platforms. There is no need to install fonts or
keyboard drivers to type in Amharic. The free typing page also
allows Google, Yahoo and Bing search in Amharic,
አማርኛ, for the first
time. The screen can also be used as a test page for Amharic in
that Ethiopic Unicode documents appear as Ethiopic when pasted
to the page. The web site is to give Amharic users the power to
type in their own alphabet and English and paste the documents
in other applications. This is another milestone in the history
of the script and the Amharic language as anyone with internet
access can now freely type in Amharic. The availability of free
Geez fonts has made it simple to print. In 2010 the free web
site was visited more than 100,000 times. The page can also be
accessed by cell phones with Android OS at the free site or from

In 1988 Dr. Aberra Molla presented an
Amharic document on AIDS for the first time when there were only
about a thousand cases in Ethiopia. He later published the same
document in the Ethiopian Review Magazine in 1991. In 1994 he
freely gave out a GeezEdit Amharic Parts font so that Amharic
readers download the font and read his document on AIDS, though
this has since been replaced with newer font formats. In spite
of these efforts AIDS managed to affect millions of Ethiopians.
