"I enjoyed your beautiful poetry. Isn't there a way this can
be communicated in the Amharic script? But watch out as there are so
many Amharic programs and many of them without support; I have tried
them all. We are soon publishing an Anthology of African Art &
Literature. You may consider submitting a few of your poetry for
consideration. See our Website at URL: http://mailer.fsu.edu/~afroam

Selam Everybody;
HAPPY NEW YEAR AND Melkam Gena !!!
I am posting this e-mail in response to the above issue raised by
Dr. Ashenafi Kebede concerning the difficulty of communicating in
Amharic computer scripts. Not only have we produced excellent word
processing programs, we have recently released additional software
for use in Ethiopic e-mail and publication on the Internet. Dr.
Ashenafi is a member of the Ethiopian Research Council which in 1990
recognized our work "...for computerizing Ethiopic and
revolutionizing the Geez script."
To prove a contemporary point and encourage the use of these
software (and satisfy Dr. Ashenafi's wishes) I have requested and
gotten permission from the author (Abebe Gelagay) to print the poem
he mentioned. I have replaced the English characters with Geez and
posted the Amharic poem on the Internet. "yeTobia ldet mech
new?" is typed as "Yuobiya lDt Mc Nw?"or "y/uobiya
ld/t m/c n/w?" in EthioWord.
Your suggestions, comments and feedback are welcome. We remain
grateful to the true friends of Ethiopia and many who have continued
to stand by us and the beautiful Ethiopic.
(Note: I have reduced the content since the original message was
for EthioList; not Internet. Also note that only those with our
programs will see the Ethiopic. A graphics of the document, as shown
below, is one of our temporary methods of presenting the Amharic
text as a picture so that everybody can see it.)
